Interview with Bharti Gokhale, Director at Dynamic Crane Engineers Pvt. Ltd. India. Has been working in Crane Sector for 14 years.

Cranesy: What do you love about cranes?
Bharti Gokhale: It’s simplicity and complexity! We only deal with mobile cranes. Basic use of crane is very easy to understand but at the same time different varieties of cranes make it a complex machine. I like everything about cranes. Right from its massive size to its different applications. As we are manufacturer of Crane Safe Load Indicators, we basically study the main part of crane like boom, winch, hook and the load chart.

C. : Tell us about your career in Crane Industry. How did you join into this sector?
B. G.: I have done my engineering in Electronics from Pune University. After working as Design Engineer in Power Electronics field for 3 years I joined my family business of cooling towers. Later on (in year 2001) we started manufacturing electronic Weighing scales. Here we entered into field of load Sensing. At this time my husband having worked for largest Crane hiring company in Asia, for five years, started taking work of crane maintenance in India. We were mainly looking into Liebher and Demag Cranes. Then we entered into field of Crane Safety Systems. And thus the journey in the field of crane begin.

C. : Would you recommend other women to undertake this career?
B. G.: Yes definitely. If you want to do something different, this is the field. Today mobile cranes find it’s application in various fields like construction, plant erection and maintenance, power plants, refineries, infra projects etc.

C. : Best lesson you’ve learned along your career?
B. G.: Perseverance pays! Also do not get stuck at one place!

C. : Speaking about CRANE SAFETY. What recommendations do you have to people working with cranes?
B. G.: As my business is to provide Crane Safety System, Crane Safety is at utmost important for us. We conduct workshops on Crane Safety. In year 2011 we had conducted free workshops for the industry on crane safety. Our program is known as CSAP – Crane Safety Awareness Program. We conduct the same in various industries as per their requirement. What we have observed that major accidents in our country take place due to ignorance. With experience, people tend to become over confident and then due to small mistake big accidents take place. My recommendation is to read the instructions thoroughly and follow them religiously.

C. : Aside a work, how do you spend your spare time?
B. G.: I spend most of the time in my business only. Other than this reading and travelling are my hobbies.

C. : Are you facing new challenges in Crane Industry? Tell us about it.
B. G.: My country is going through a slow down phase since last two years. All the projects are on hold or moving at very slow speed. This has direct impact on the crane industry. But we are seeing a change in it. Slowly this year some positive movement is seen and some projects have started coming in. Also there is void of good trained staff in crane industry. So lot of work can be done in the training field.
