Mammoet helps Mauritius keep the lights on

The Mauritius Central Electricity Board (CEB) is in the process of upgrading one of their existing power plants, the Saint Louis Power Station, in the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis.

The scope includes the transport of 290Te engines and 67Te generators.

The plant’s vital components are reaching the end of their lifecycles. BWSC, a global turnkey contractor and operator of power plants, was contracted to undertake the refurbishment before the equipment could fail and cause disruptions to Port Louis’s power supply. The refurbishment will allow the plant to increase its electricity output by 25% which will accommodate economic growth in the region. BWSC turned to Mammoet for the transport and installation works of engines and generators.

The scope includes the transport of 290Te engines and 67Te generators. The engines and generators were transported from the port of Port Louis to the power plant for installation. All the transport had to take place at night time due to the city’s heavy congestion; the abnormal transport would have brought the city to a standstill were it done during the day. To combat the dark Mammoet fitted the trailers with special LED lights to help the crew with visibility. All equipment reached the site safely and was installed by Mammoet through jacking and sliding. The plant is expected to be up and running by September 2017.
